FIELD STUDIES & TOURS
Nicaragua is an extraordinarily beautiful country with a rich cultural heritage, fascinating history, and home to some of the friendliest people you will meet. The terrain is characterized by active volcanoes, misty cloud forests, thick coastal jungle and miles of undisturbed beaches.
Our programs combine unique educational opportunities with community based tourism, individually tailored to participants' areas of interest, including:
International Human Rights - Community Development - Environmental Studies - Public Health
Funds raised through the excursion program will go directly into supporting La Isla Foundation's projects.
Testimonials
“ I was so impressed by the resilience, the will, and the love that everybody I met seemed to exhibit. There are great flaws in our world and among our species, but I feel very strongly that we have an equally great power and opportunity to overcome these flaws. Keep fighting the good fight! ”
Charles, Connecticut College
“ I can't believe that we were only there for six days because so much was packed into every day. This trip seems to have entirely changed my perspective. Coming back to the US gave me much more of a culture shock than Nicaragua. I wish I could join you in León to help more! ”
Claire, Connecticut College

TRIPS
Through experiential learning, participants will have a unique opportunity to visit, listen, question, and learn directly from Nicaraguans.
Conventional agribusinesses: Participants will visit the communities of La Isla and Candelaria where the sugarcane industry pervades every aspect of life. Through a community presentation, conversations with the people, and one-night home-stay, participants will gain insight on how a deadly epidemic of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is destroying their community, and what action the community is taking to overcome such difficult circumstances.
New forms of agricultural: In order to see an alternative to this exploitative model of agriculture, participants will visit communities like La Garnacha and Miraflor, which with communal support have developed diverse, organic, and sustainable agricultural practices.
Exchange with experts: UNAN-León has partnered with La Isla Foundation in the development and implementation of several projects. Their professors provide participants with critical background necessary to understand the historical socio-economic factors that have resulted have resulted in one of Nicaragua’s worst public health crises.
Throughout their stay, participants will discover Nicaragua’s magnificent landscapes and astounding variety of flora and fauna. From coastal mangroves to the mountain cloud forests, participants will be surrounded by an amazing variety of plant, animal, and bird species, many unique to a particular region of the country.

Sustainable Tourism, Trips and Tours in Nicaragua

Through exchanges with workers and their families, community leaders, and professors, we hope our participants can better understand what has led these communities to their present state; the challenges they face today; and the possibilities and solutions that will lead to a more equitable agricultural system.
We hope that these trips will not only be a powerful learning opportunity in showing how our food and goods are often produced, but also serve as a catalyst for participants to take action in their own lives. There are alternatives to exploitation; one just needs to see for themselves what they are, and how a more viable and livable future is possible for workers, communities, and country as a whole.
We want the Foundation to serve as a bridge between different groups of people that have much to learn from one another. The Foundation’s team is dedicated to making these excursions an unforgettable experience for both participants and the communities they visit.
